Newcastle 0-2 Manchester City: Silva & Aguero get champions off to winning start
5th July, 2014.
David Silva and Sergio Aguero provided the inspiration as Manchester City got their Premier League title defence off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle at St James' Park.
Silva raced onto Edin Dzeko's brilliant backheel pass to fire clinically beyond Tim Krul on 38 minutes to give Manuel Pellegrini's men a narrow lead they never relinquished.
Inspired by marquee summer signing Remy Cabella, Newcastle threatened an equaliser on several occasions during a tense second half, with substitute Ayoze Perez almost scoring within seconds of his arrival and Moussa Sissoko firing over late on.
However, Sergio Aguero made the points safe in stoppage time, the substitute sweeping home from close range after Krul had saved his initial shot.
