TAMALE UTRECHT, S AUTOMATIC QUALIFICATION TO THE MIDDLE LEAGUE RECEIVES A BLOW AFTER A GOALLESS DRAW WITH GUAN UNITED.
16th March, 2014
Tamale Utrecht’s hopes of automatic promotion to the middle league suffered a setback when they were held to a goalless draw by city rivals Guan United at the Tamale Sports Stadium on Sunday.
It was the Red and Whites' seventh away match without a win, while Guan's play-off chances were dented by their poor home form.
In a scrappy contest, Utrecht's Razak Patrick had the best of chances to kill the game but an equally brilliant performance by former Utrecht goalkeeper Wahab Danladi[No Problem], saved the day for Guan United. The visitors were frustrated by the home goalkeeper, who blocked shots from Iddrissu Osman,Razak Patrick, and Abdulai Alhassan[Abu] from close ranges.
Utrecht's failure to win a seventh successive away games is at least tempered by their 3-1 win at Dynamos FC last Sunday, but they slipped out of the play-off places after Wa Africa United's win over RTU on Saturday.
After threatening only briefly in the first half, Utrecht appeared the more reinvigorated after the interval, with Wahab drawing a saves from Razak and Osman.
Razak had the visitors' best opportunity, and was fortunate that Guan United wasted two decent chances as the game petered out into an inevitable draw.
As it stands now Tamale Utrecht would need to win convincingly against Wa Africa United and hope Guan United slip in the final round of matches to ensure their safety progress to the middle league.
