DUTCH EREDIVISIE: FEYENOORD CRUSH UTRECHT , AJAX BACK TO THE TOP WITH 1-0 WIN OVER PSV,

FC Utrecht made a stuttering start to the new year after going down heavenly to Feyenoord in the opening matches of the second round of the Dutch league r a 5-2 reverse at home.

The former Dutch cup winners were looking to bolster their position on the league table after a difficult 2013 which saw them placed 9th,but Feyenoord had other ideas as they went four points behind both Ajax and Vitesse.

It was a thrilling affair at the Stadion Galgenwaard, with four goals coming inside the opening quarter.

Utrecht's Jens Toornstra scored two of them, one either side of strikes from Ruben Schaken and Graziano Pelle, which had given Feyenoord the lead.

The Rotterdam club would go ahead and stay there after that, though, with Stefan De Vrij, Schaken again and Tonny Trindade de Vilhena making sure of the points.

Ajax responded to Vitesse Arnhem's Saturday win by beating PSV Eindhoven to return to the top of the Eredivisie.

The Amsterdam side saw their title rivals win 2-1 at PEC Zwolle to move three points clear, but responded by getting the better of PSV 1-0, with Kolbeinn Sigthorsson scoring the only goal (64).

The Icelandic striker's seventh of the season could prove to be one of the most vital, for it put his side back top on goal difference.

At the bottom of the table, NEC Nijmegen leapfrogged ADO Den Haag to send them bottom with a 3-1 win.

They led through Kevin Conboy but were immediately pulled back by Danny Holla's penalty.

The first-half action did not stop there, though, as Marnick Vermijl made it 2-1 with NEC, with Rens Van Eijden then wrapping things up midway through the second half.

The day's other game saw Cambuur Leeuwarden beat the Go Ahead Eagles 2-0.

Marcel Ritzmaier scored the game's opener in the 18th minute, with Martijn Barto making sure of the points (65).
