Last weekend the two-day orientation course took place that prepares coaches and players for TUFA’s life skills programs: the Academy Program for the players within the academy and the Fellowship Program for twenty players from the local league.

TUFA focuses on both the sport skills and the educational and social development of her players. A healthy social development is crucial for the players to be able to deal effectively with the demands and challenges within and outside the football.

The academy distinguishes itself with this approach really from other football academies. “We do not consider life skills to be a small thing, TUFA is working with an unique long-range plan in which life skills training is integrated in its totality”, Social Director Jolanda Goes mentions. Players attend a weekly interactive workshop as well as individual coaching sessions with professional trainers. With the use of an online database and frequent communication between the life skills team and TUFA’s educational, technical and facilitating staff the development of the players is on all fronts carefully monitored and adjusted.

The Fellowship Program has the same principles and is part of TUFA’s social responsibility to contribute to the development of the community. Many players focus solely on football and are disappointed later. The life skills program teaches the players to believe in their own strength and create opportunities for themselves outside the football.

The life skills programs are run by the local organisation AfriLEAD which has been implementing such programs at secondary schools in Ghana very successfully since some years now. ‘The intensity with which  we can guide the footballers within this program is unique and we expect a lot of progress in the coming months”, Peter Awin, vice-CEO of AfriLEAD, says.
